1st and 2nd Years C & D : Important

Hello, dear all. Don´t panic, I won´t give you extra work. Just a reminder. Keep a copy of your answers (the same answers you´re sending me) in your folder and bring them to class after the winter holidays.

1st year students:

You don´t have to send me the answers to the texts. You only have to send the summary ( see ex. 5). However, answering all the questions will give you an insight of the text which you´ll need to make the summary. The answers will be corrected in class as we discuss the texts.

Date for the test on The British Empire:

1st D: Aug. 11th

1st C: Aug. 14th

2nd Year C and D

Hello, dear all. We´re back to virtual business. First of all, I want to address those who were absent to class last week. I handed out material to work with during these two weeks, which some friends of yours very kindly saved for you. Those who kept the copies for the absentees, please, contact your friends as soon as possible.

You will read the texts in the order they appear below :

1. "The Constitution: the system of government".
2."Forming a government"
3. "Parliament"(Unit 2)
4. "Parliament. Making new laws: Bills and Acts"

By July 14th, you´ll have completed the following assignment:

1. Read " The constitution.." and answer questions 1, 2, 3 and both questions on the discussion section.(Mind you, these are to be done on your own)
2. Read "Forming..." and do exercises 1 and 2.
Note: "Election Fever" should be read and done for the first class after holidays.
3. Send answers to dolferlife@gmail.com

By July 17th you will send me your second assignment on the parliament.

1. Read "The Parliament" (Unit 2) and complete ex. 2.
2. Read "Making new laws" and answer all the questions.
3. Send answers to dolferlife@gmail.com

Finally, I´d like to add a comment on the Personal Project. Those who were absent last week, and could not contact your tutor and hand in the draft on time, you must do so. If you enter your tutor´s blog you´ll find his or her mail address. Most probably, those who handed in on time, will be receiving comments on the draft from your tutor. You should use this time to start working on the corrections. Remember next deadline is on August 27th, which means you´ll only have three weeks after holidays. Besides, I don´t want to sound like a joy killer, those weeks will be busy with tests.
Talking about tests, you can jot down in your agenda our next test on August 20th (C) and 21st (D).The topics as I told in class will be The Monarchy, The Government and Parliament.

Well, that´s all for now. Keep well and work hard.
Dolores

1st YEAR C and D

Hi, 1st year students. Here we meet again in this blog. Last week I handed out some material to work during these two weeks. Those students who saved copies for absentees, please remember to contact them so that they can fetch their material as soon as possible. The hondouts you´ll work with during these two weeks are:

1."Ethnic Minorities in the U.K"

2."Case Study: West Indians and the British experience"

Eventhough we discussed the pictures in class, I will ask you to do this again before reading the texts. In "Ethnic Minorities...", you´ve got two scenes ( one is a drawing and the second a photograph). Pay attention to the time and place in each scene. Just for those who were not in class and because the background is not clearly seen in the photocopy, let me tell you the first scene is located in India and the second in Britain. Now, loking at the people, figure out where they come from, the time each scene describes, and the reason to be there. Can you relate any of these scenes to the text read on the British Empire? If so, what´s the connection? Consider, too, the family groups in each scene. Are they examples of extended family? What type of life style do you think they have?

Once you´ve exploited the pictures,

a) do exercise 1 and read the text

b) answer questions 2, 3 and 4.

Before reading "Case study...", exploit the picture, too. Where are these people from?, What can you tell about them, their culture, the way they all dress and the ornaments in the room?

After reading the text, answer questions 1 and 2. Bare in mind that when it´s suggested to work in pairs, you´ll have to work on your own. Similarly, You are not to compare your results with the rest of the class (as suggested in 2.b) until we meet again. As regards 2.c, choose a country from the U.K.

After working on both texts, write a summary on "Immigration to Britain" explaining the following issues:

1. Immigration waves in the past 70 years. Countries of origin and reasons for moving to Britan.

2. Immigration and the government: did the British government encourage immigration? If so,when and why? Did this change at any time? What measures did the government take in relation to immigration?

3. Immigrants: What were their reasons to move to Britain? What was the relationship between immigrants and Britain? What were their expectations? What difficulties did they have to face?

4. To support your ideas with examples and details, consider not only the two texts but also the information you gathered in the chart in ex.2 page 7 as well as the pie chart in ex. 4.

5. Send your summary to dolferlife@gmail.com before July 16th.
